The West: How the West was Won and Lost
GOAL: Your task is to answer the big question, "Why do people migrate?" and,"What impact does migration have?" in regards to the expansion of the United States during the 1840's-1860's.
ROLE: You are a college student at U.W.M.C. who needs to help create a visual interpretative collection on Westward Expansion, which will be shown at the Leigh Yawkey Woodsen Art Museum.
AUDIENCE: The audience will be the general public, however many "history buffs" will most likely view the collection.
SITUATION: Your professor, Ms. Kosciuszko, is asking for you to go beyond simply telling the story of westward expansion. She wants you to develope a sophisticated understanding of this time in our country's history. This means seeing things in gray and not just black and white. It means understanding multiple perspectives. It means connecting this period of time to other periods in our history. She wants you to use the tools of the historians.
